ABSTRACT

In recent years, the industrialization and increasing individualization of Korean society have had a significant impact on the formation of intimate relationships, leading to a surge in demand for lifestyle media that address mental health issues. In particular, the television landscape has witnessed the proliferation of counseling talk shows that deal with self-actualization, mental well-being, and pathological concerns. These programs emphasize the rationalization of emotions as a path to happiness and success in social life. At the same time, the rise of intimacy experts specializing in child psychiatry or family issues has led to a diversification of counseling-related television content and products, of which Dr. Eun-Young Oh's psychological counseling talk show is one of the most visible and accessible products. However, few media studies have examined the emergence of intimacy experts such as Dr. Oh and the commodification of therapeutic discourses in Korean popular culture. Therefore, this chapter draws on Eva Illouz's theories of emotional capitalism and the happiness industry to explore the cultural and political implications of the emergence of a talk show based on the language of psychology in the Korean context represented by Dr. Oh's Golden Clinic through a textual analysis of the program.
